Fun for all the family at ‘Kids in the Shed’

June 5th, 2011

On Sunday 19 June, the Old Bus Depot Markets play host to Kids in the Shed, a day for the very young.

Spoil your littlies at the large number of stalls catering for children, their rooms and their play. There will be beautifully handcrafted toys, creative artworks for kids’ rooms, handcarved wooden toys, local designers making children’s clothes, doll’s houses, fun bedding for kids, music, and all sorts of specialist gear for newborns.

Entertainment will be provided for the young ones – always much fun and noisy!

A Time to Celebrate All Things Wool

May 3rd, 2011

Winter is on the way and there is no better way to warm your body and your soul than with Wool. Hand felted garments and accessories, designer knitwear, millinery, weavings, funky beanies and farm label knitwear it’s all being featured at our upcoming Wool day at the Old Bus Depot Market.

In this its 16th year, you’ll get the chance to see some old favourites and meet some new Woolly friends as Craftspeople who work with wool join us from as far afield as Victoria, South Australia and close to home in regional NSW.

Chat with a member of a regional guild, watch demonstrations of hand spinning, hand felting, and other traditional wool based crafts. For the curious, adventurous and the well experienced woollies among us, a Celebration of Wool is a great way to spend a day at the markets (And there are definitely no prickly jumpers in sight!).

Eggs or antiques for Easter?

February 23rd, 2011

Visit Canberra’s famed Old Bus Depot Markets this Easter long weekend for a hunt of a different kind at the special Easter Portobello Road event.

Held on Easter Sunday, 24 April, this annual favourite focuses on antiques and collectables, and offers a fun day out for those ready and willing to trawl the aisles, scan the stalls and pick through the piles of interesting curios.

There’s always something to catch the eye and you can speak with experienced antique dealers throughout the day.

Portobello Road presents a huge variety of items including linens and lace, retro decorative arts, vintage clothing, fine silver, small antique furniture and restored pieces.

The fun is in the search, and your reward will be much greater than that from any Easter egg hunt.

Easter Portobello Road at the Old Bus Depot Markets will be open from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 24 April and entry is free.

International Day or Valentines Day at the markets?

January 18th, 2011

Sunday the 13th of February marks two occasions at the Old Bus Depot Markets.  One is our international day where you can sample the sights, smells and tastes of our multicultural city.  The other is that it’s the day before Valentines day and you’ll be just in time to find a special gift at the markets for that special somebody in your life.

Or maybe you can combine them?  How about your Valentines present is a trip to the markets to savour wonderful dishes from Spain, Laos, Ethiopia, France and Mexico. Purchase a mysterious hand carved statue from Africa, a traditional handbag from Thailand made from Thai silk, or a warm hand felted woollen hat from Nepal.

Whatever you join us at the markets for – we are sure that you’ll love it either way!.

Looking forward to 2011 as much as we are?

December 20th, 2010

2010 was a big year at the Old Bus Depot Markets.  The markets return after a short break on Sunday 9th January with Portobello Road.

Congratulations to the winner of our OBDM Shop and Win in December competition.  The winner was:  Pat Aman from Surrey Downs in South Australia.  Pat has won a summer long weekend staying at the Lantern Apartments in Thredbo.  Well done Pat and thankyou to everyone that entered and the thousands of people we had through the door doing their shopping in Canberra each Saturday and Sunday before Christmas.

So join us bright and early on Sunday 9th January down on the Kingston Foreshore in Canberra and launch the new year in style at the Old Bus Depot Markets – Canberra’s Sunday Best.
